چکیده
NOVEMBER 2003 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | C LOUDS AND CLIMATE: A PROBLEM THAT REFUSES TO DIE. Clouds of many varieties fill the global atmosphere (Fig. 1). They are composed of drops and crystals with scales on the order of microns to millimeters. They are associated with convection and turbulence on scales of meters to kilometers. They are organized within mesoscale and synoptic-scale dynamical systems that interact with the global circulation of the atmosphere. The representation of cloud processes in global atmospheric models has been recognized for decades BREAKING THE CLOUD PARAMETERIZATION DEADLOCK

متن کاملUnified Cloud and Mixing Parameterizations of the Marine Boundary Layer: EDMF and PDF-based cloud approaches
The objectives of this project are: i) to develop a unified parameterization for the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) and ii) to implement and test this parameterization in the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). This unified MBL parameterization will be based on two main components: (i) the Eddy-Diffusivity Mass-Flux (EDMF) parameterization of boundary layer mixing; and ...
متن کاملMesh reconstruction by meshless denoising and parameterization
We present a new approach to simultaneously denoise and parameterize unorganized point cloud data. This is achieved by minimizing an appropriate energy function defined on the point cloud and its parameterization. An iterative algorithm to minimize the energy is described. The key ingredient of our approach is an “as-rigid-as-possible” meshless parameterization to map a point cloud with disk to...
متن کاملEvaluation of an entraining droplet activation parameterization using in situ cloud data
[1] This study investigates the ability of a droplet activation parameterization (which considers the effects of entrainment and mixing) to reproduce observed cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC) in ambient clouds. Predictions of the parameterization are compared against cloud averages of CDNC from ambient cumulus and stratocumulus clouds sampled during CRYSTAL‐FACE (Key West, Florida, Jul...
متن کاملMeshless quadrangulation by global parameterization
Point cloud is a basic description of discrete shape information. Parameterization of unorganized points is important for shape analysis and shape reconstruction of natural objects. In this paper we present a new algorithm for global parameterization of an unorganized point cloud and its application to the meshing of the cloud. Our method is guided by principal directions so as to preserve the ...
